Location:  Blackburn or Dudley 

Salary: up to £40,000 DOE

Working Hours: Monday – Friday (office hours)  

Main Responsibilities of the Materials Buyer  

Inventory Management

  • Responsible for maintaining and improving cost-effective inventory levels managing the tension between ensuring continuity of supply against stock holding costs
  • Be aware of, and apply, a wide range of inventory management techniques to ensure cost effective continuity of supply
  • Investigate and root cause, as appropriate, any stock outs updating the inventory controls accordingly
  • Responsible for the identification and cost-effective disposal of obsolete and slow-moving inventory
  • Develop and report on an appropriate set of KPIs for all aspects of Inventory Management on materials purchased.

Purchasing

  • Use the appropriate ordering method that maximises flexibility whilst minimising the transactional, non-value adding activities, that add costs.
  • Contribute to, or lead, negotiations with stockholders.
  • Gain an understanding of price drivers in the external environment supported by a network of reliable sources of information to provide senior management an insight into anticipated material costs
  • Improve the efficiency of the transactional elements of the role through new methods of engaging with the supplier whether that’s through process, systems or relationship development
  • Develop and implement a series of discrete purchasing strategies that have a clear and timely set of deliverables for the portfolio of products and materials
  • Promote and maintain the company as a preferred customer to all suppliers

Experience and Skills required

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Purchasing ideally gained within a metals background
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of inventory management
  • CIPS qualified or studying towards

  • Ability to remain professional in difficult situations
  • Positive attitude towards their work
