Mechanical Design Engineer

Salary: £35,000 - £45,000
We are an innovative and successful privately owned SME that designs and manufactures hi-tech capital equipment for worldwide export with a head office in the UK and two overseas offices. A vacancy has arisen for a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the team in new product development driven by company and market requirements; and provide mechanical engineering support for current products to enhance productivity, reliability and continuity of performance and build, ranging from small component designs to complex turnkey solutions.
Principal Accountabilities:
From a top level brief, and working in collaboration with electrical, controls and software engineers - design and implement cost-effective equipment and solutions for engineering problems and help improve safety, reliability and throughput.
Developing a project specification with colleagues, often including those from other engineering disciplines.
Producing details of specifications and outline designs.
Designing robust solutions within a 3D environment, ensuring best practice modelling to minimise waste in the model and eliminate conflicting information between models and drawings.
Discussing and solving complex problems with customers, internal departments, sub-contractors and suppliers, considering the implications of issues such as cost, safety andtime constraints.
Creation of documentation for the release of products to production, including but not limited to BoM, spares list, build instructions and assembly drawings.
Assembly of prototypes, recommending modifications following prototype test results.
Preparing product documentation for service, publications and sales and marketing.
Creating engineering drawings conforming to BS8888, ISO 9001 and internal company standards for presentation to various suppliers.
Ensuring designs conform to international standards and directives.
Undertaking any other projects and duties as requested which are within the competence of the job holder.
Education / Qualifications and Experience:
The ideal candidate will be qualified to degree level in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science, Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent. The candidate will have a minimum 5 years' experience in a product development environment specifically design for manufacture, assembly and service; to ensure design concepts can be consistently manufactured to enable repeatability of function and operation.
Job Specific Skills / Personal Qualities
Experience of using Autodesk Inventor for part drawing and assembly creation. Other CAD packages would be considered. (Creo, Solidworks)
Experience of BoM creation and control within CAD package.
Experience of Vault or other PLM software.
Ability to interpret and evaluate both mechanical and electrical drawings.
Knowledge and experience of working within a formal ECN process to maintain clear and accurate records of changes within drawings.
Ability to manage time and resources and prioritise tasks based on a dynamic project function with a willingness to travel and undertake customer visits when required.
Strong verbal and precise written communications skills to engage with internal and external contacts, effectively gather information and express instructions clearly.
